I was looking for something other than soup or curry to use my split peas for. so of course I started searching my beloved Pinterest. How do people mess up Pinterest recipes and crafts so horribly? Is it for the likes? Oh right, back to the food, so I happened upon this recipe (I tend to customize most recipes I find). I thought I had spinach in the freezer, but it was Kale, and nowhere near the amount that the recipe called for. But I'm no quitter. Here's the thing no one tells you about split peas, they are bitter when raw. The flour can have a bitter taste, and when you soak (i didn't soak mine overnight like the recipe said, just put them to soak when I woke up) then blend them, they are horribly bitter. I was so completely freaked out after i mixed all the ingredients together because I had no back up plan. A little voice in my head said "fry a small patty, don't throw the mixture out yet" . Lo and behold, no bitterness. So when tasting your mixture, don't be freaked out by the bitterness, it goes away after cooking. I used oat flour, (as in, throw some oats in the blender and blitz until you have powder) as the binder. So far I've had no gluten problems with Morning Flake GF oats, so I'm happy there. Honestly, I just used seasonings that I like, cumin, hot pepper, cilantro, I think that's why I only generally use recipes as a guide, people like different flavours, everything can be modified to what you like. I added steamed veg ( cabbage, broccoli and string beans)and roasted some carrots. Carrot recipe, also found via Pinterest is here As you might have noticed, I've used rosemary and not thyme (again, modify and adapt), I also added a tablespoon of honey and halved the amount of balsamic vinegar called for in the recipe. The leftover lentils just got thrown in a pot and basmati rice added when the peas were almost cooked through (or so i thought...aldente peas, let's just leave it at that ok).
